St-Julien Second Growth Château Léoville Poyferré 2018 is an elegant blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet colour with purple highlights.

The 2018 vintage is juicy, with generous aromas of red and black fruits, accompanied by notes of oak and plenty of freshness. On the palate, the wine takes on a lot of breadth while retaining its juicy character. Suave, aromatic notes of black fruits and oak persist. The tannins are still quite present and will develop a lovely patina with a little aging. The powerful, dense finish lingers on and on. 2018 is an exceptional vintage and is offered here in lovely half bottle format. Sold in hedonistic large format.

The 2018 Léoville-Poyferré performs similarly to the bottle tasted a few weeks earlier in the UK for my in-bottle round-up, although here I sense more opulence on the nose, perhaps more florality. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, broad and sensual, plummy with that beguiling symmetry on the finish. It needs several years in bottle but it will be well worth the wait. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier.Neal Martin20th September 2022
