Château Léoville Las Cases 1989 is a noteworthy example from this esteemed Bordeaux estate, renowned for its Super Second Growth status. Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, this vintage showcases a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting typical proportions of 65-85%, alongside Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The winemaking process employs a combination of wooden, concrete and stainless-steel fermentation before maturation for 18-20 months in predominantly new French oak barrels. Château Léoville Las Cases has been in the hands of the Delon family since the late 19th century, contributing to its legacy and consistent quality.

One of the most youthful wines of the vintage, the 1989 Léoville Las Cases unwinds in the decanter and glass with aromas of blackcurrant and pencil shavings, framed by a discrete patina from its aging in oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and tightly wound, it`s impressively pure and vibrant, though it lacks the mid-palate plenitude of the vintage`s best wines, displaying a touch of tannic asperity on the finish. I wouldn`t be surprised to see it continue to improve with further aging, though my sense is that the Cabernet Sauvignon might have been picked a little prematurely in this vintage. - William Kelley

A First Class Second Growth

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
