The 2012 Château Léoville Las Cases showcases a distinct intensity on the nose, combining aromas of black fruits, cassis, vanilla, toast, and spices. With a medium acidity and resolved tannins, it boasts a full-bodied profile and long finish. Although already entering its drinking window, the wine is expected to evolve with further ageing.

The tannins are noticeably bigger than the other St Juliens in the lineup, with more grip through the palate and you feel the structure exerting a gentle pressure at the close of play. There are fruits here also, in the cassis and bilberry frame as with Léoville Barton, with touches of mint leaf and eucalyptus. Not generous, but plenty of impact, and a gentle mouthwatering salinity. Lighter framed within the Las Cases world, but one of the more impactful 2012s overall.Jane Anson30th March 2022

The 2012 Léoville Las-Cases is much more closed on the nose, quite strict with blackberry, cedar and gravelly aromas, later hints of cassis and a splash of soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fairly oaky entry, though there is fruit concentration to soak that up with bottle age. Maybe it just lacks a bit of personality at the moment and a second bottle at Bordeaux Index's horizontal confirms a bit of roughness, a bit hard-edged at this stage. Give this time. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Neal Martin27th September 2022

Black crimson. Angular and savoury. Appetising above all. Not deep, nor sweet. Even slightly skinny. Very vibrato with the vintage character. Not one of the standouts of the vintage. Too angular. (JR)

Classic Bordeaux Beyond Compare

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
