Château Léoville Las Cases 2002 is a full-bodied Bordeaux blend from a renowned St-Julien Second Growth. This wine exemplifies the property`s meticulous selection of grapes, with only 43% of the harvest included in the final blend. The composition features 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, all sourced from a low yield of 17 hectolitres per hectare. Notably, this vintage records the highest alcohol content in the estate`s history at 13.5%. The wine showcases a deep ruby hue and demonstrates a complex profile of blackcurrant and subtle liquorice notes, indicative of its notable depth. Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most esteemed classified estates in Bordeaux.

Moderately saturated red-ruby. Captivating if cooler nose of blackcurrant, licorice and minerals. Very intensely flavored and gripping if currently quite tight. The black fruit and menthol flavors show an almost medicinal austerity and uncanny penetration on the palate. Very ripe for 2002, at 13.5%, with a pH of 3.85. Today, I find a more classically firm finish and a bit more personality than in the young 2004, but then the new vintage has a long way to go before it's in bottle.

A First Class Second Growth

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
