Château Léoville Las Cases 1996 is a notable Bordeaux blend from this renowned St-Julien Second Growth, primarily composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The grapes were handpicked from meticulously maintained vineyards, known for their deep gravelly soils. This vintage showcases a complex bouquet featuring dark fruits, tobacco, and hints of earthiness. On the palate, it offers a structured experience with firm tannins and a lingering finish, reflecting its aging potential. Château Léoville Las Cases is among the most prestigious estates in the Médoc, renowned for its historical significance and quality.

Smoked tea, cassis, blackberry, cigar box, camomile, mint leaf, slate and spice, this explodes out of the glass and then holds its own, going nowhere at all over the two or three hours that we sat around the table enjoying it. The 1970 may have had the initial heartstopping armatics, but it was the 1996 that delivered long into the night. Concentrated, tannic, confident. Opened 1.5 hours before drinking, 50% new oak.Jane Anson12th June 2024

Saturated bright, dark ruby. Perfumed, vibrant, very youthful aromas of cassis, violet and bitter chocolate. Dense and powerful, with great clarity of flavor thanks to a terrific spine of acidity. Almost painfully structured wine but not at all hard. Finishes very long and gripping, with a note of bitter chocolate. Drink 2012 through 2040.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2002

Amazing colour in terms of depth. Not much nose. Some spice on the nose. Very tough. Masses of tannin. Extremely concentrated but is it a pleasure? Dry finish but lots of impact; so long. High-toned but lots of ripe fruit underneath. This wine, among the three, has enough fruit to balance the tannins. Big and not the most charming that we`ve been served. Dry finish. (JR)

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
