Though hard to believe possible, Château Léoville Las Cases produced an exceptional wine in 1986 that many consider to be of almost equal stature to the extraordinary 1982. It is a classic blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, offering the perfect distillation of its Pauillac terroir, with notes of black fruits, cedar, tobacco, spices and graphite. Though ideal for drinking now, this may well yet still have another decade of life left in it.

Having tasted the 1986 Léoville Las-Cases countless times, I wondered whether it would ever come round. The news is, it has, and it is beautiful. Stunning delineation on the nose, this has lazer-like focus and breathtaking tension, very mineral-driven with touches of blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with those once rigid tannins finally softening, layers of black fruit laced with cedar and tobacco with a silky-smooth finish. Heavenly! Tasted at the "Judgement of Clapham Junction" dinner in London. Neal Martin1st March 2022

Very deep colour but with some evolution at the rim. Some acidity and vegetal note. Cheek gripping. Cussed. Painful acidity. All concentration rather than balance. (JR)

A First Class Second Growth

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
