Château Léoville Barton 2005 is a Left Bank Bordeaux from a renowned 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Julien. Predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon with additional Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this ripe 2005 vintage presents a structured palate with layers of dark fruit and subtle earthy undertones. Bottled in a magnum format, it offers excellent ageing potential and slower maturation. Enjoy with robust dishes or cellared for future exploration.

The 2005 Leoville Barton is deep brick-colored. It needs a fair bit of shaking to wake up notes of blackberry preserves, crème de cassis, mince pie, and kirsch, giving way to a perfume of candied violets and wood smoke, plus a hint of cardamom. The light to medium-bodied palate is laden with black and red berry layers, supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless acidity, finishing with epic length and depth. The 2005 Léoville Barton has a delightful bouquet with more red fruit than the Langoa, wild strawberry, redcurrant, light cedar and wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and modest depth, quite fresh with a slightly rustic finish. It becomes a little medicinal with time. The 2005 is cut from a different cloth to contemporary Léoville Barton but it is still worth seeking out. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin17th June 2025

Classic Bordeaux Beyond Compare

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
