Léoville-Barton 1995 is a full-bodied, Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux red wine from the esteemed Second Growth of Château Léoville-Barton in St-Julien. This quintessential claret is produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot grown on the gravelly clay soils in the east of St-Julien. The wine is typically matured in 50% new oak for 18 months. "A beautiful wine, with layers of ripe fruit, berry, cedar, vanilla and light spice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Very, very classy stuff." Wine Enthusiast, 2007

It has been a long time since I encountered a bottle of 1995 Léoville Barton. It has a mature, slightly fungal bouquet, a little smudged and certainly without the precision or complexity of the 1995 Ducru Beaucaillou. Yet it develops a heart-warming camphor note with aeration, allied with used tea leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, gentle grip, and is surprisingly youthful with hints of desiccated orange peel on the finish. This has much more to give. Tasted at the 1995 Bordeaux off-line at Piccolino in London. — Neal Martin, 2nd December 2025

Somewhat closed and reticent after bottling, but still impressive, this 1995 possesses a dark ruby/purple color, as well as an oaky nose with classic scents of cassis, vanillin, cedar, and spice. Dense and medium to full-bodied, with softer tannin and more accessibility than the 1996, but not quite the packed and stacked effect on the palate, the 1995 is an outstanding textbook St.-Julien that will handsomely repay extended cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025. — Robert Parker, 23rd February 1998

Very dark lustrous ruby. Quite evolved nose. Scented. Hint of linseed oil. Solid, well balanced, lots of stuffing and the tannins are well managed – almost imperceptible until the very end of the palate. (JR) — Jancis Robinson, 17th February 2011

Classic Bordeaux Beyond Compare

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
