The 1986 Château Léoville Barton continues to thrive within its optimal drinking window, highlighting the remarkable longevity of that particular vintage. With a dark garnet hue, it presents a medium to full-bodied profile, offering complexity alongside a well-balanced structure. The rounded flavours feature blackberry and black currant notes, complemented by accents of allspice, tobacco, and savoury hints of grilled bread. Subtle undertones of mushroom, a touch of anise, and cedar add depth, all supported by smooth, polished tannins that lead to a lingering finish.
92 Robert Parker
As it closes in on its 40th birthday, the 1986 Léoville Barton retains the appearance of a 10-year-old wine. Unwinding in the decanter and glass with aromas of blackcurrants, cedar box and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated core of fruit, tangy acids and chalky tannins. The initial impression remains somewhat angular and uncompromising, but with aeration it rounds out nicely. I'd tend to rank this behind the immensely charming 1985, underrated 1988 and compelling 1989 but ahead of 1983 and 1982 in the 1980s sweepstakes at this address. Given a good cork, well-stored bottles will last another two decades. — William Kelley, 21st December 2023

Still young-looking and – young-smelling. Very full and rich nose. Opulent. Slightly dusty. Even more robust than most other vintages. (JR) — Jancis Robinson, 23rd January 2008

Classic Bordeaux Beyond Compare

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
