Maury is a town in the northern part of the Roussillon best known as an appellation for sweet vins doux naturels. These sweet wines can be made from the three Grenache varieties (Noir, Blanc and Gris) and are produced via ‘mutage’, the halting of fermentation at the desired sweetness level via the addition of fortifying spirit. The ‘Legend’ series from Gérard Bertrand signifies an exceptionally limited release of rare old wines whose origin other than appellation, vintage and blend is not disclosed. Produced in 1939, this is a ‘grenat’ style of Maury made from 100% Grenache Noir and aged non-oxidatively. It rich, round and luscious, with deeply complex notes of dried cherry, figs, molasses, tobacco and spices. A treat served simply by itself, but it is a brilliant accompaniment to blue cheese or dark chocolate.
