Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2001 is a Super Tuscan blend from the Maremma region on the Tuscan coast. This wine consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, grown in sandstone-rich soils that impart a distinct Mediterranean character. The 2001 vintage in Tuscany was superb, providing the heat needed for full ripeness while maintaining structural integrity. Winemaking involves fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel followed by 18 months of ageing in French oak barriques. It is a full-bodied and intense wine, featuring notes of eucalyptus, blackberry and tobacco. The tannins are firm but polished, reflecting the maritime influence of the coast and the estate’s focus on power and complexity.

The 2001 is vibrant, rich and expansive, with gorgeous layers of dark cherries in liqueur, menthol, tobacco, leather and licorice. The wine flows with great intensity all the way through to the enveloping, sensual finish. The 2001 appears to be at the early part of its drinking window. Both bottles I tasted showed elements of rusticity, particularly in the bouquet, that worsened with air. Antonio Galloni1st May 2011
