The 1997 Le Pin has a pleasurable, well-defined raspberry-, wild strawberry- and cranberry-scented nose. It is conservative and straight-laced. The palate is quite chewy on the entry though there is good acidity. Relatively simple compared to other vintages, there are notes of black cherries, redcurrants, tobacco and dried herbs, but it lacks tension and poise. This is a monochromatic Le Pin that engenders feelings of indifference. It is a Pomerol with just a single emotion; this does not and has no desire to take you, the taster, anywhere of interest. There were 567 cases produced. Tasted at Bipin Desai’s Le Pin vertical in Los Angeles in November 2008. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.Neal Martin25th March 2025

A Mould-Breaking Pomerol

Le Pin is one of the newer names of Bordeaux having only made its debut in 1979. The estate takes its name from the pine trees that first stood outside the winery. Situated on Bordeaux's Right Bank, in the prestigious appellation of Pomerol. Production is truly miniscule by Bordeaux standards and Le Pin is thus one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world.

The estate unveiled a state-of-the-art new winery in 2012 and produces superb red wines from 100% Merlot vines that are an average of 40 years old. Beautifully opulent wines, with a seductive, velvety texture and floral complexity. Organic practices are adopted in the vineyard and wines can be aged for up to 22 months in new oak.
