Le Pin is one of the newer names of Bordeaux having only made its debut in 1979. Owned and operated by the Thienpont family (of Vieux Château Certan), production is truly miniscule by Bordeaux standards and it is one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world. The 2006 is a 500-600 case release of 100% Merlot from a vastly underrated vintage. Now at fourteen years of age, this is perfect for drinking.

Tasted blind, I mistook the 2006 Le Pin for the 2005, and it is drinking very well today, bursting with aromas of dark berries, incense, sweet spices and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with an ample core of rich, succulent fruit and powdery structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, expansive finish. - William Kelley

The 2006 Le Pin never quite fulfilled its glorious showing from barrel. It has a forward bouquet that's open, ready and sensual with kirsch, licorice and mint aromas. There is an unusual sense of precocity that is atypical for 2006. The medium-bodied palate has plenty of flesh, a touch of ripe red cherry, crushed strawberry notes and traces of sage and cedar. Is it a long-term proposition? I am not convinced. Still, you have to stand back and admire its precision, focus and charm. Tasted blind at a lunch in Bordeaux.Neal Martin25th March 2025

A Mould-Breaking Pomerol

Le Pin is one of the newer names of Bordeaux having only made its debut in 1979. The estate takes its name from the pine trees that first stood outside the winery. Situated on Bordeaux's Right Bank, in the prestigious appellation of Pomerol. Production is truly miniscule by Bordeaux standards and Le Pin is thus one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world.

The estate unveiled a state-of-the-art new winery in 2012 and produces superb red wines from 100% Merlot vines that are an average of 40 years old. Beautifully opulent wines, with a seductive, velvety texture and floral complexity. Organic practices are adopted in the vineyard and wines can be aged for up to 22 months in new oak.
