Le Pin 1996 is a red Merlot from the Pomerol appellation. This estate is located on a small parcel of deep gravel over a bed of iron-rich sand, which provides the wine with immense weight and exotic perfume. The 1996 vintage produced a wine of exceptional concentration and depth, reflecting the warmth of the year. The winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel followed by maturation in new oak to create a profile of opulent richness. It concludes with a long, resonant finish of black plum, cedar, tobacco and fine spice. It is an opulent and highly sought-after wine.

The 1996 Le Pin was the first vintage I ever tasted—blind as part of a Right Bank tasting for “Wine” magazine in 1999. I have tasted this two or three times since then. Showing visible signs of maturity, the 1996 offers mulberry, leather and tertiary aromas. The palate has decent concentration, considering this was never a Right Bank vintage. The tannins feel just a little coarse and it needs more precision on the finish. Maybe there are better bottles out there. In any case, drink any bottles in the near future as they will not improve. A Mould-Breaking Pomerol

Le Pin is one of the newer names of Bordeaux having only made its debut in 1979. The estate takes its name from the pine trees that first stood outside the winery. Situated on Bordeaux's Right Bank, in the prestigious appellation of Pomerol. Production is truly miniscule by Bordeaux standards and Le Pin is thus one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world.

The estate unveiled a state-of-the-art new winery in 2012 and produces superb red wines from 100% Merlot vines that are an average of 40 years old. Beautifully opulent wines, with a seductive, velvety texture and floral complexity. Organic practices are adopted in the vineyard and wines can be aged for up to 22 months in new oak.
