Cheval Blanc`s second label is reserved for fruit that doesn`t meet the exacting standards required for their flagship wine, yet still maintains a high level of quality. Not produced annually, as every plot of Cheval Blanc holds potential for their Grand Vin, the 2020 vintage of Le Petit Cheval is a blend composed of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot, representing 12% of the total production that year. Impressive tannin quality accompanies delightful aromas and flavours of currants, berries, and cherries, with hints of chocolate and walnut. Medium-bodied, the wine possesses a lively and refined character. While it will continue to evolve over the next three to five years, it already exhibits remarkable expression. Available here in half-bottles.

A blend of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot, the 2020 Le Petit Cheval has a pH of 3.6 and a deep garnet-purple color. It swans out of the glass with showy scents of crushed redcurrants, blackberry preserves, and kirsch, followed by suggestions of lavender, cedar chest, menthol, and fallen leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm backbone of chewy tannins, with seamless freshness to support the tight-knit red and black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering mineral note.Lisa Perrotti-Brown12th March 2023

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval is a little simplistic compared to its peers in this flight, with black fruit and graphite notes, but it lacks nuance. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it's fleshy but needs more grip. This seems to be a wine predesigned to be approachable, and in that sense, it fulfills its purpose. Lovely, lovely wax and cooked lemon fruit aromas. Excellent sweet-spice and white-chocolate complexity. Very expressive. Relatively soft but still has the crispness and precision of Sauvignon Blanc. Long, mulchy sort of length. (RH)

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
