First appearing in the 1988 vintage, Le Petit Cheval is the second wine of illustrious Saint-Émilion estate, Château Cheval Blanc. On average, 4,000 cases of Le Petit Cheval are made each vintage and it is produced mostly from declassified wine from the Grand Vin that is blended with other selected parcels. The 2016 vintage was exceptionally strong for Bordeaux and this release, a blend of 62% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, is particularly good. It has wonderful perfume, excellent purity of fruit, sumptuous texture and an exceptionally long finish.

The 2016 Le Petit Cheval has a strange nose at first, with more heightened lavender/potpourri scents than expected. With time, more red fruit, hickory and light autumn leaf aromas emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins. This is quite savory in style, indicating some Cabernet Franc (38% of the blend). A little chewy toward the finish, and I am not sure it has the longevity of its peers. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
