Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval 2020 is the second wine of the iconic St-Émilion property Cheval Blanc. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of St-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types. clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, which are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances. The 2020 is a blend of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot and made up 12% of total production at the property in this vintage. "A huge amount of density and grip, the tannins close in from the first moment and it needs some time to get past the intense cocoa bean, liquorice and cassis fruit, but as it opens up you get a generous serving of peony, iris and violet. The focus is very much on what the Cabernet Franc is giving at this point, and this is a serious Petit Cheval." Jane Anson, 2021

A blend of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot, the 2020 Le Petit Cheval has a pH of 3.6 and a deep garnet-purple color. It swans out of the glass with showy scents of crushed redcurrants, blackberry preserves, and kirsch, followed by suggestions of lavender, cedar chest, menthol, and fallen leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm backbone of chewy tannins, with seamless freshness to support the tight-knit red and black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering mineral note.Lisa Perrotti-Brown12th March 2023

The 2020 Le Petit Cheval is a little simplistic compared to its peers in this flight, with black fruit and graphite notes, but it lacks nuance. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it's fleshy but needs more grip. This seems to be a wine predesigned to be approachable, and in that sense, it fulfills its purpose. Lovely, lovely wax and cooked lemon fruit aromas. Excellent sweet-spice and white-chocolate complexity. Very expressive. Relatively soft but still has the crispness and precision of Sauvignon Blanc. Long, mulchy sort of length. (RH)

One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand.
