Alongside Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy produces some of the most exclusive and highly sought-after wines in Burgundy. Originally formed in 1988 by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy, the cult domaine comprises approximately 23 hectares, including significant parcels in nine Grands Crus and eight Premier Crus. All the vines are farmed biodynamically and have been since 1988. This particular release come from a 0.57-hectare plot in the Grand Cru Latricières-Chambertin, which was added to the Leroy holdings in 1989. The 1996 vintage is perfectly mature right now, offering plenty of ripe black cherries, truffles, baking spices and a touch of damp earth.

Superb ruby-red. Extraordinarily fine, pure, high-pitched aromas of black fruits, violets, minerals and fresh blood. Extraordinarily sweet and pure in the mouth, with a juicy, sharply defined flavor of crystallized dark berries. Powerful acidity gives the wine a wonderful lightness on the palate. Very firm finish begins almost tough and then opens slowly and builds. Today I get a stronger impression of soil character here than in the Clos de la Roche.Stephen Tanzer1st March 1998

Burgundian Royalty

The Leroy name is a key pillar of the Burgundian wine scene and a leading light in the Côte d'Or, with three main strands: Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d'Auvenay (a small, biodynamically farmed Domaine founded by Lalou in 1988).

In 1988, recognising the trend towards domaine bottling in Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy purchased what would become Domaine Leroy: an estate situated in Vosne-Romanée (previously known by the name Domaine Noëllat). Domaine Leroy labelled wines are thus are produced from parcels of grapes grown on the 22ha of domaine-owned Côte d'Or vineyards, which span nine different Grand Crus. These wines are produced biodynamically and at extremely low yields, resulting in superbly concentrated expressions of the Burgundian terroir.
