Château Latour 1964 is a Grand Vin from the Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and exhibits aromas of blackcurrant, graphite and earthy undertones, evolving into hints of leather and spice. On the palate, it presents a structured, medium-bodied profile balanced with acidity, delivering a notable persistence. This vintage, despite the challenges faced in 1964, has demonstrated remarkable longevity and continues to evolve gracefully in the bottle.

The 1964 Latour initially feels a little overawed by the openness and opulence of the 1962, a tad reserved and bashful on the nose, the palate missing the same depth and complexity. However, observing the wine over two hours, it simply blossoms in the glass, revealing beguiling autumn leaves, aniseed and cigar box scents on the exquisitely defined nose. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannin, cedar and graphite infusing the black fruit with a classic, regal finish that leaves me in awe. I mention in my previous tasting note that the 1964 can be startling. This is one of the finest examples that I have met. Just do not be afraid to give a 30 minute decant. Light ruby. This famous wine came from a bottle that seemed to have reached its apogee. Sweet and rich, it was very brisk and bracing but seemed to be fading slowly. I wonder whether there are better bottles? It was good but no longer especially vigorous. By this time we were well on to the Quality Chop beef, incredibly crisp roast potatoes and horseradish grown by our host and creamed by Simon Hopkinson. (JR)

A Towering First Growth
Situated on the Bordeaux's Left Bank in the appellation of Pauillac, this superb First Growth is produced from the estate's 92ha of vines, spread across 138 plots, (47 hectares of which are located in renowned 'L'Enclos'). The clay and gravel soils give superbly concentrated, textural Cabernet Sauvignon dominant reds, with Merlot and smaller percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc making up the blend.
The estate also produces two further celebrated reds, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Certified organic since 2018, biodynamic techniques are also used in the vineyard.
