Rated as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Latour is one of the world’s most celebrated wine producers. The property has been owned by French entrepreneur François Pinault since 1993 and falls under the umbrella of his holding company, Groupe Artemis. Its grand vin is made from the vineyard plots surrounding the château and the vines are in average 60 years old. This is the 1952 vintage of the flagship wine, which reveals a remarkable bouquet of blackcurrants, hazelnuts and leather.

The 1952 Latour is similar to the bottle that I drank four years earlier. This is well-defined on the nose with dark berry fruit, black tea and rose petals, perhaps just a touch of blue fruit that I have not noticed previously. The palate is medium-bodied and very well-structured, crisp acidity with ample substance. What you might call a "solid" First Growth. Quite dense on the finish that is more austere than the 1949 or 1955, it will not improve with further cellaring and should be consumed over the next decade. Tasted at the "Two" dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.

A Towering First Growth
Situated on the Bordeaux's Left Bank in the appellation of Pauillac, this superb First Growth is produced from the estate's 92ha of vines, spread across 138 plots, (47 hectares of which are located in renowned 'L'Enclos'). The clay and gravel soils give superbly concentrated, textural Cabernet Sauvignon dominant reds, with Merlot and smaller percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc making up the blend.
The estate also produces two further celebrated reds, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Certified organic since 2018, biodynamic techniques are also used in the vineyard.
