Château Latour 1951 is a fully mature First Growth hailing from one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship of its era. The vineyard, established around 1680, maintains a renowned plot known as the Enclos, where a small selection of mature vines contribute to the Grand Vin. The 1951 vintage presents a structured palate, with firmly integrated tannins reflecting its heritage. Aromas of dried dark fruits and earthy nuances are prevalent, while flavours evolve with age.

- The 1951 Latour shows bricking commensurate with its age and does not possess a powerful nose, but my immediate reaction was one of complete surprise, perhaps even astonishment. Maybe there’s a scintilla of greenness, but far less than expected, and who cares when it offers so much lovely tobacco and red plum laced with tobacco and cedar? Surely the palate would be more representative of an appalling growing season. No – not at all. There was dark berry fruit laced with sous-bois and tobacco, touches of soy surfacing with aeration. I was gobsmacked by the almost velvety texture, not unlike, say, a 1959. It just goes to show that you should never write off any bottle, irrespective of vintage reputation.

A Towering First Growth
Situated on the Bordeaux's Left Bank in the appellation of Pauillac, this superb First Growth is produced from the estate's 92ha of vines, spread across 138 plots, (47 hectares of which are located in renowned 'L'Enclos'). The clay and gravel soils give superbly concentrated, textural Cabernet Sauvignon dominant reds, with Merlot and smaller percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc making up the blend.
The estate also produces two further celebrated reds, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Certified organic since 2018, biodynamic techniques are also used in the vineyard.
