Château Langoa Barton 2016 is a Third Growth Saint-Julien red wine from a vintage that provided exceptional phenolic ripeness and structural density. This 2016 bottling features a profile of blackberry and forest floor with a significant tannic backbone. The wine was matured in 60% new French oak which has contributed a subtle spice and a toasted character to the concentrated fruit. It possesses a high level of dry extract and a vertical acidity that suggests a very long potential for cellar ageing.

The 2016 Langoa-Barton has a minty-fresh bouquet with plenty of black fruit; hints of pencil shavings and loamy elements develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous, but I was expecting more detail and terroir expression to show on the chewy, pastille-like finish. Very fine, although I suspect there will be melioration in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020
