Château Langoa-Barton is a 3ème Grand Cru Classé estate situated in Saint-Julien and is well-known for producing incredibly traditional and formidably structured wines. The 2005 is only now just entering into an approachable phase for drinking but, with significant decanting, unfurls to reveal wonderful notes of blackberry, crème de cassis, cedar, tobacco and peppery spice. This will easily last another 20+ years and may well be worth holding onto a little longer.

The 2005 Langoa Barton takes time to cohere in the glass, but eventually black cherries, black plum and a touch of mint develop. The palate is medium-bodied with just a little rusticity on the entry, dense tannins and fine acidity. The 2005 is a little muscular in style but nicely poised, with a slightly medicinal finish (a common theme of this vintage now that it is reaching age 20.) Tasted at the château. Very dark purple. Exceptionally ripe and opulent on the nose – most unusual for St-Julien and at first I thought this wine might be over the top but in fact there is sufficient rigour on the palate – mild constitution, definitely St-Julien. Well done! Not at all hot on the finish – moderate, beautifully judged. If you were in the dock, you’d want this one to be on the bench [on trial/be the judge]. Very neat and mild, and dry, on the finish. Fine tannins. (JR)
