Château Lafon-Rochet 1990, a Fourth Growth estate located in Saint-Estèphe, is noted for its traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage presents a complex profile of dark fruits, tobacco and earthy undertones, typical of the region`s terroir. The estate, established in the 17th century, has undergone notable evolution, particularly in recent years with enhancements in vineyard management and winemaking techniques. This wine, while structured, requires careful ageing to fully express its nuances. A study in classic Bordeaux craftsmanship.

The 1996 Lafon-Rochet shows slight bricking on the rim. It`s a little rustic with black fruit, sandalwood, and sage on the nose, but this is certainly showing good vigor after 25 years. The palate is balanced with tannins, a little "sauvage" now, mushroom and mint, fennel and black tea, a slight dryness creeping in at the finish but a perfect Englishman’s Claret to drink now because it has evolved a lot in the last five years. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property. - Neil Martin
