Château Lafleur is undoubtedly one of the most highly prized estates in Pomerol, with arguably only Pétrus and Le Pin being able to better it in terms of prestige and quality. 1961 is one of the legendary vintages of Bordeaux and the then owners of Lafleur, Therese and Marie Robin, are widely considered to have produced one of the greatest wines of the Right Bank.

My first ever 1961 Lafleur was fake, and the second was marred by TCA. Third time’s the charm? This comes from Michel Bonnefond’s cellar, the erstwhile co-owner of Christophe Roumier’s Ruchottes-Chambertin, so provenance is sound. I do notice some turbidity in the glass. The Cabernet Franc is expressive, with black truffle, potpourri, black fruit and a sprig of wild mint, perhaps a little rustic yet bewitching in perfume. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely balance and poise. Yet there is, again, an element of rusticity that pervades this Lafleur, so I am not moved to describe it as some “apogee of Pomerol”. This bottle doesn’t have the audacity of the 1961 Trotanoy nor the kaleidoscope of aromas like the 1961 Petrus, the sensuality of the 1961 Latour à Pomerol. Banal as it might be to say, it is just an effortless, delicious, mature Lafleur with no intention of blowing you away. It just wants to be drunk. Maybe there could be slightly better bottles out there, but since it is one of the most elusive Pomerol wines on the planet, I doubt I will ever find out. Neal Martin1st August 2024

Pomerol's Other Superstar

Château Lafleur has come to be recognised as one of greatest producers in Pomerol, offering wines of incredible balance, purity and elegance, with distinct mineral character. A stand out name for Bordeaux's Right Bank, the estate also produces a second red, Les Pensées de Lafleur, produced from a 0.68ha plot with its own distinct terroir - resulting in a lighter, more fragrant style compared to the Lafleur.

Despite both wines being classic blends of Cabernet Franc and Merlot with 20% new oak, the result is two quite different expressions: for example the the dominance of cigar-box and graphite Cabernet Franc complexity in the Lafleur.
