Château Lafite Rothschild is the iconic wine estate awarded First Growth status in the historical 1855 Bordeaux Classification. This is the 1988 vintage of the château’s Grand Vin, a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. Expect a powerfully structured and beautifully tannic red, with pronounced notes of black fruits, complemented by hints of cedar and truffle. Available here in a magnum format.

The 1988 Lafite-Rothschild is the best of the triumvirate that ended the decade. Another bottle vindicates that view. It shows an intense bouquet with graphite-tinged black fruit mixed with cedar aromatics that seem to effortlessly cruise as Lafite is wont to do. The palate is beautifully balanced and blossoms in the glass. The 1988 has svelte, finely chiseled tannins. Tobacco notes appear towards the finish. This quintessential Lafite-Rothschild is even better than the bottle popped open at the château six years ago. Tasted at the 1988 Bordeaux dinner at Noble Rot Mayfair. Neal Martin2nd July 2024

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite.
