In all likelihood the 2001 vintage will forever live in the shadow of its more highly acclaimed 2000 precursor, however, in its own right it was a vintage of elegant, medium-bodied and superbly balanced wines that are perfect for early drinking. A blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot, this is an impressive release from Lafite Rothschild with lovely purity of fruit, finely-meshed tannins and an admirably long finish.

The 2001 Lafite-Rothschild has a little more precision on the nose compared to the millennial Lafite. It’s vivid and focused, featuring blackberry, briar, cedar and mint, and a touch of cola in the background. The palate is well balanced and svelte in texture, building beautifully with aeration to a gorgeous, truffle-tinged finish that is a little spicier than three years ago, when I last tasted this vintage. Maybe it just tails off toward the finish when compared to the 2000. Still, this is an elegant, blue-blooded Lafite-Rothschild that exudes class.Neal Martin1st September 2021

An Iconic First Growth

A highly-coveted First Growth from Pauillac, the estate boasts a fascinating history that can be traced back as far as 1234. Spanning 110 hectares, Château Lafite Rothschild produces a legendary first wine, Lafite Rothschild, showcasing beautiful aromatics and an extraordinary capacity to age; a superb second wine, Carruades de Lafite, and Légende de Pauillac.

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
