A highly-coveted Premier Cru Classé from Paulliac. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. The 2011 vintage is an intense, deep crimson colour. Offering up a dense nose with aromas of red and black fruit, boxwood and spicy notes. Very dense on the palate with fine intensity, concluding on a beautifully complex finish.

The 2011 Lafite-Rothschild was impressive from barrel. It is very composed on the nose with brambly red fruit, loam, touches of sous-bois (decayed autumn leaves). After five minutes, there is a noticeable liquorice scent. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, a little soft in the middle with a fleshy tarry, liquorice-infused finish that just tapers away. Elegant, refined, but not the First Growth's strongest effort from this period. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.Neal Martin1st April 2022

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Deep dark crimson with rich purple rim. Delicate, pure cassis dark fragrance, the merest hint of oak spice. Tannins are a conundrum, feeling dense and savoury at first and then gliding over the finish line. Polar opposite of Mouton style. (JH)
