The 1994 Château Lafite Rothschild presents an aromatic profile that hints at black fruits alongside nuances of crème de cassis, red currants, plums, lead pencil, bitter chocolate, green bell peppers, as well as mineral notes. On the palate, it exhibits a medium concentration, showcasing well-layered black fruit flavours with a silky texture. While the mid-palate displays a subtle dip in intensity, it is brightened by refreshing acidity and underpinned by robust mineral characteristics. The wine also reveals noticeable, angular tannins and concludes with a medium-long finish driven by subtle black fruit notes, accentuated by a touch of lead pencil.

The 1994 Lafite-Rothschild is served from a large format whisked straight from the château. Perhaps that goes some way to explain the impressive showing. Very youthful in hue, it has a captivating bouquet with black fruit infused with cedar and melted tar, kind of old school but in a positive way. The palate is medium-bodied and surprisingly muscular for a Lafite, with plenty of black fruit interwoven with graphite and a succulent finish. I`ve had this from bottle a few times, but this format is certainly better. Tasted from an ex-château double magnum at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux. Neal Martin6th June 2024
