A highly-coveted Premier Cru Classé from Pauillac from the `53 vintage. A rare find on the shelves here at Hedonism, expect the savoury complexity of a beautifully aged Bordeaux. Look for complex minerality, pencil shavings and spice.
100 Vinous
The 1953 Lafite-Rothschild surpassed my expectations. Deep in color with only a thin brick core, the bouquet is atypical for Lafite-Rothschild in that there is no holding back, rather an outpouring of blackberry, raspberry confit, crushed stone, pencil lead and a touch of spice, delivered with breathtaking poise and detail. It frankly knocks the 1953 Latour into a cocked hat, perhaps not least because it may be the only vintage that has the audaciousness of its rival. The palate is medium-bodied with crystalline delineation, a hold-onto-your-seats sense of focus that is equal to anything I have tasted from this era. Then it gracefully winds down towards quite a sensual and mineral-driven finish that exhausts all the superlatives and you are rendered tongue-tied by the prodigious brilliance of this wine. It redefines my perception of this First Growth. Tasted at the International Business & Wine First Growth Dinner at the Four Seasons. Neal Martin1st June 2018

An Iconic First Growth

A highly-coveted First Growth from Pauillac, the estate boasts a fascinating history that can be traced back as far as 1234. Spanning 110 hectares, Château Lafite Rothschild produces a legendary first wine, Lafite Rothschild, showcasing beautiful aromatics and an extraordinary capacity to age; a superb second wine, Carruades de Lafite, and Légende de Pauillac.

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
