1959 is one of the most iconic vintages of the 20th Century and, in that hallowed year, the illustrious Pauillac First Growth, Château Lafite Rothschild, is widely considered to have produced one of the estates finest ever wines. This should be approaching full maturity but could well last a few more years yet.

Drunk from magnum, the 1959 Lafite Rothschild is one of this château's finest vintages of the postwar period, and this example was as good a bottle as I've ever encountered. Blossoming in the glass with aromas of sweet red berry fruit, pencil shavings, potpourri and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, exhibiting terrific mid-palate plentitude while remaining quintessentially suave and elegant. Served alongside the compelling 1959 Ausone, it was impossible to choose a favorite.William Kelley21st December 2023

This bottle of 1959 Lafite-Rothschild came directly from the château cellars. Served blind, I estimated a vintage half its age. It has an ethereal bouquet with breathtaking precision, black fruit, pencil lead, crushed stone, pressed iris flowers and most of all, aromas of walking round an old English stately home. The palate has a haunting sense of balance, filigree tannins and spellbinding focus with a long, persistent, tobacco-tinged finish. My word, this comes very, very close to perfection. Tasted at Maison François in London. Neal Martin26th January 2023

An Iconic First Growth

A highly-coveted First Growth from Pauillac, the estate boasts a fascinating history that can be traced back as far as 1234. Spanning 110 hectares, Château Lafite Rothschild produces a legendary first wine, Lafite Rothschild, showcasing beautiful aromatics and an extraordinary capacity to age; a superb second wine, Carruades de Lafite, and Légende de Pauillac.

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
