From the Vosne-Romanée grand cru, La Tâche DRC 1981 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir with an alcohol content of 12.5%. This vintage follows a challenging year marked by a wet September, necessitating a strict selection process. A product of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, renowned for its high-quality Burgundy wines, it presents an aromatic profile of withered rose petals, dried cherries, and spice box notes that are characteristic of the terroir. The limestone and clay soils of La Tâche contribute to its structural integrity, offering a delicate expression with resolved tannins and an earthy finish. This wine is an example of the estate`s commitment to quality in every vintage.

The 1981 La Tâche Grand Cru is a vintage I have not met before, and this fine example was poured en magnum. It has an endearing bouquet with wonderful delineation: mineral-rich red fruit, iris flower, and just a scintilla of dark chocolate coming through with time. The palate is finely balanced with the weight and depth you expect from this Grand Cru. Secondary notes abound with sous-bois and white pepper, though it does lack some brightness and complexity on the finish by dint of the challenging growing season rather than anything else. Bottles will probably be fully mature based on this. Neal Martin25th June 2024
