La Romanée Comte Liger-Belair 2010 is a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Vosne-Romanée, noted as the smallest AOC in France. This monopole vineyard, owned and meticulously cared for by the Liger-Belair family since 2002, spans just 0.8452 hectares. The site features a 12% slope, with silty-clay soils enriched with limestone. Following biodynamic principles, horse-ploughing is employed to maintain soil integrity. The wine undergoes native yeast fermentation, often with 100% new oak for 15-18 months.

- With the 2010 La Romanée we enter the realm of wines that are going to require many, many years to just start drinking well. In the 2010, I am drawn to the wine's explosive energy and tension. Beams of salivating acidity and firm tannins provide the backdrop for a vivid and viscerally thrilling Burgundy. The 2010 is an eternal wine that captivates readers for many, many decades. I only hope to taste it again when it is mature.

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2010 La Romanée Grand Cru is a magnificent contribution to the vintage, one of the best that Louis-Michel has overseen. The bouquet is very intense with mineral-soaked red berry fruit mixed with truffle, rose petals, orange blossom and lavender. The palate is medium-bodied with refined tannin, wonderful balance and intensity, great backbone and enormous persistency in the mouth with hints of sage and black pepper. This La Romanée will require a decade in bottle but it will be worth the wait. Tasted June 2015. - Neal Martin
