Château La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most renowned vineyards of Pomerol. This historic estate, situated exclusively on the plateau, was named in the 18th century for its position across the localities ‘Petrus’ and ‘La Fleur’. Established in Libourne in 1937, Jean-Pierre Moueix had an eye for the excellent quality potential of the Pomerol appellation. Château La Fleur-Pétrus was his very first acquisition in 1950. A Merlot dominant blend, here is the 1970 vintage.

The 1970 La Fleur-Pétrus comes from one of the few magnums that remain in the Moueix’s cellar, but to be honest, it does not shine like the 1964 and 1967. It has a pleasant bouquet with moderate vigor, notes of mulberry, black plum fruit and a conspicuous touch of iodine developing with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is framed by firm tannins, probably due to the impeccable provenance and format, though it remains unapologetically strict and linear. This is not flamboyant like Petrus or Trotanoy, with copious sous-bois notes toward the finish. It just lacks a bit of joie-de-vivre.
