Having only been a Denominación de Origen since 1989, Bierzo is a relatively new wine appellation but it is blessed with some remarkable old vineyards. It was these that attracted the legendary Priorat winemaker, Alvaro Palacios, to the region. Alongside his nephew, Ricardo Perez, he founded Descendientes de J. Palacios in 1998, and together they have rapidly gained an incredible reputation for their fragrant and elegant wines made from the local variety, Mencía. `La Faraona` is a single vineyard wine regarded as their ‘grand cru’ cuvée.

Vinous
Opaque ruby. Cherry liqueur, potpourri, minerals and smoky Indian spices on the seductively perfumed nose. Concentrated, bright and sharply delineated, offering sappy raspberry, bitter cherry, licorice and dark chocolate flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Really stains the palate but comes off as graceful, with breathtaking, mineral-driven intensity. Silky and broad in the mouth but also structured and focused, finishing with fully buffered tannins and remarkable clarity, thrust and stony persistence. The combination of power and finesse here is really something else.Josh Raynolds1st September 2014
