Rated a Grand Cru Classé in the 1955 classification of Saint-Émilion, Château La Dominique is situated in the northwest part of the appellation. The estate has been a wine producer since the 16th century and it’s well-known for its Merlot-based red wines. This release is the 1989 vintage, a blend composed of 81% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Now at 30+ years of age, the wine has retained its fine balance and freshness, with lovely notes of clove and black pepper coming through.

The 1989 La Dominique is mature in colour with moderate bricking on the rim. The bouquet has probably faded a little in recent years, but is still utterly charming with elegant red fruit, iron rust, truffle and sage, perhaps a little Pomerol like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. Now at almost 30-years of age it may have dried out somewhat, although it has retained fine balance and freshness, the final third with clove and black pepper coming through. Drink soon if you have any bottle and enjoy. Tasted at the vertical tasting at La Dominique. Neal Martin1st April 2019
