La Conseillante 1982 is a Left Bank Bordeaux red wine from a banner vintage in Pomerol. The warm, dry season of 1982 yielded ripe, abundant fruit with supple tannins and balanced acidity. Aromas of black cherry, violet and tobacco are layered with truffle, cedar and a gentle earthiness from bottle age. The palate is silky and harmonious, its mature fruit carried by fine-grained tannins and a lingering mineral line. The finish is long, savoury and composed, reflecting both the vintage’s generosity and La Conseillante’s hallmark elegance.

The 1982 La Conseillante has always been one of my favorite Pomerols in this vintage, and this bottle suggests there is no way it will relinquish that position. Interestingly, it is rather muted for the first five or ten minutes. Then, the aromatics flower with exquisite red fruit, mulberry, leather and black truffle. A little Brettanomyces is suggested in the background, though it is very minor. The palate is medium-bodied and initially lighter than the previous bottle. Still, it magically deepens with aeration, delivering those trademark clove and black truffle scents, the latter becoming particularly prominent. It is not a powerful Pomerol. After four decades, there isn't a huge amount of grip, yet it has lovely balance and charm. Tasted at the Lia's Wings/book dinner at Medlar restaurant. Neal Martin26th December 2023

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the eastern flank of the Pomerol commune, La Conseillante has a long history dating back the early 1700s. The team farms around 13 hectares of vineyards, comprising 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. All grapes are hand harvested, and fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with a keen eye on temperature control to preserve fruit character. Following fermentation, the wines are aged in 90% new oak for around 18 months before being bottled without filtration.

The vineyards of La Conseillante share borders with those of L'Evangile, Petit-Village, Vieux Château Certan and Cheval Blanc - illustrious neighbours indeed. Since the 2000 vintage, the wines have been characterised by a fullness and concentration that easily allows for extended cellaring and offers a hedonistic treat in youth.
