Château L`If 2020 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Château L`If is a relatively new wine estate, founded in 2010 by Jacques Thienpont, who also owns the renowned Pomerol estate, Le Pin. The property is located in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation, on clay and gravel soils, and is planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The 2020 vintage – presented here in half-bottle format – is still in its infancy and will enter its drinking window in 2025.

The 2020 L'If has a slightly more savory bouquet than the preceding 2020 Quintus, perhaps with a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc (16% in this blend). The complexity really comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and quite saline, with firm tannins and hints of oyster shells toward the long, refined finish. This fans out wonderfully. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin12th November 2024

Bursting with aromas of sweet blackberries, cherries, licorice and spices, the 2020 L`If is medium to full-bodied, bright and youthfully structured, with a pretty core of fruit, chalky tannins and a mouthwatering finish. In recent years, this property has begun to find an identity of its own, the bulk of whose holdings lie next to Troplong-Mondot, a property the Thienpont family owned for a decade in the 20th century. - William Kelley

84% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.Rich and ripe with damson and dark-fruit notes. Full and broad across the palate but backed and driven by very fine tannins. Texturally smooth, the chalky freshness and point of acidity on the finish pulling it all together. (JL)
