L’If – the French word for a Yew tree – was known as Château Haut Plantey before Belgian winemaker Jacques Thienpont purchased it in 2010. The property consists of 8 hectares of which 5 are situated next to Château Troplong Mondot. The 2016 vintage is 100% Merlot, matured in 50% new oak. It is a concentrated and generous wine, offering notes of blackcurrants, cherries and cassis, ending on a savoury aftertaste. Only 6,000 bottles were produced.

The 2016 L’If offers blackberry, cedar and mint aromas on a nose that needs time to coalesce, but eventually reveals harmony and focus. The new oak is very well assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and pliant in the mouth, delivering gentle grip toward the creamy-textured finish. This is an extremely impressive wine from l’équipe Le Pin. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin1st August 2020
