L’Ermita Alvaro Palacios 1998 is a notable red wine from the renowned Priorat region in Spain. Crafted by Alvaro Palacios, often hailed as a pioneer of modern Spanish winemaking, this wine showcases the complexities of the local terroir. Primarily composed of Grenache although some sources suggest that it may also be a blend including small amounts of Cariñena (Carignan), though precise varietals for this vintage are unspecified. Álvaro Palacios, hailing from the esteemed Palacios Remondo family in Rioja, studied enology in Bordeaux and worked under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Château Pétrus. After his tenure at Pétrus, he was drawn to the Priorat region, where he established his own winery.

Full deep ruby. Great brooding nose of black and red fruit liqueur, spices and flowers. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, but with bracing acids giving it a three-dimensional texture. A wine of uncanny chewy depth. Firmly structured and youthfully unevolved, but already quite explosive on the back half. Finishes with major dusty-but-ripe tannins and extraordinary persistence. Late hints of cassis and shoe polish. A great vintage for this wine, in need of at least five or six years of additional bottle aging. Stephen Tanzer1st November 2001
