L’Eglise Clinet 1990 is a red wine from the Pomerol appellation, crafted by Denis Durantou. This vintage features a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, achieving an alcohol level of 13.5%. The wine reflects the characteristics of its vineyard, where old vines thrive in iron-rich clay soils. It is marked by concentrated notes of black raspberries, truffle, and chocolate. The texture is velvety with a well-integrated tannic structure. The 1990 release stands as a critical example of the estate’s evolving reputation, highlighting its ability to retain vibrancy despite the challenging conditions of a notably warm year.

The 1990 l’Eglise-Clinet is probably a step behind the 1989 nowadays, as proven by being poured side by side here. Showing a little more degradation in color, it has a winsome, floral bouquet with mulberry and red plum fruit, as always. Perhaps the 1989 demonstrates a little more complexity? The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, more backward than some of its Pomerol classmates with veins of cedar and dark chocolate towards the finish. It does not “kick on” like the finest vintages, but it remains a very fine wine. Tasted at the International Business & Wine Pomerol tasting. Neal Martin1st July 2019
