Hunting Hill is one of Kumeu River’s most important single vineyards, situated on the slope overlooking the celebrated Maté’s Vineyard in Kumeu. Originally planted in 1982, the site was a significant component of the estate’s Chardonnay before being replanted in 2000. Its elevated position and distinctive soils consistently produce Chardonnay of concentration and depth, balanced by a pronounced mineral freshness.
For the 2025 vintage, the grapes were hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before undergoing indigenous yeast fermentation in French oak barrels. The wine was matured in barrel for 11 months, building texture and complexity while preserving the natural acidity and definition of the vineyard.
The 2025 Hunting Hill is concentrated yet beautifully precise, with white nectarine, peach and ripe citrus complemented by subtle floral, savoury and toasted notes. There is breadth and texture through the palate, balanced by fine acidity and the characteristic mealy, mineral quality associated with Hunting Hill. The finish is long, structured and persistent, showing both the richness and remarkable precision for which this vineyard is known.
