Krug Clos du Mesnil 1989 is a prestige-cuvée vintage Champagne produced by the house of Krug in Krug in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Clos du Mesnil is a rare blanc de blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single 1.84-hectare plot in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug embarked on a restoration of this historic plot in 1971 and this 1979 bottling is the inaugural vintage release. "The `89 is one of the richest and most delicious vintages ever produced from Clos du Mesnil. Purists may say that the wine is a little over ripe, but I love its almond depth and super long length. This, to me, embodies pure hedonistic pleasure." Decanter, 2017

The 1989 Clos du Mesnil, from a warmer year, makes for a fascinating contrast to the cool inward 1988. It is a bigger, fatter wine that caresses the palate with layers of expansive, generous fruit. Sweet scents of caramel, hazelnuts and honey add complexity to the fruit. Despite its burnished, textured fruit, the 1989 remains light on its feet and superbly well-balanced but it is at, or close to, peak. To put things in perspective, the 1989 was harvested at the beginning of September – the 7th and 8th to be exact – while the 1988 was harvested between September 30th and October 2nd. Elegant Luxury

A Champagne house that needs no introduction. Founded by Johann Krug in Reims in 1843, this celebrated Maison specialises in prestige cuvées, including the multi-vintage flagship Grande Cuvée as well as the glorious Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Another highlight is the highly coveted Clos du Mesnil - a rare Blanc de Blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single, tiny 1.84ha plot of Chardonnay grapes in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

While Krug's excellent Grande Cuvée and Rosé have historically been released as multi-vintage blends with no indication of year, the team have now started including edition numbers so consumers can easily discover the age and provenance of the base wines used in the blend.
