A very rare champagne from the celebrated Maison Krug. Clos de Mesnil showcases the unique character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year. This 1.84 hectare vineyard overlooked by the village church has been protected by walls since 1698. The vineyard is located in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region. The first vintage of Clos de Mesnil to be created was in 1979, making the 1985 one of the earliest vintages.

The 1985 Clos du Mesnil is a second release from the winery, in the original disgorgment from 1997. Now at age 40, the 1985 is comfortably cruising in its middle age. Apricot jam, gingerbread, spicecake, baked apple tart, orange confit and crème brulée stain the palate. A Champagne of vinous intensity and concentration, the 1985 is lights-out. This is by far the best bottle I have ever tasted. What a wine! The 1985 sits right behind the trio of iconic vintages here: 1979, 1988 and 1996. Antonio Galloni8th April 2025

Elegant Luxury

A Champagne house that needs no introduction. Founded by Johann Krug in Reims in 1843, this celebrated Maison specialises in prestige cuvées, including the multi-vintage flagship Grande Cuvée as well as the glorious Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Another highlight is the highly coveted Clos du Mesnil - a rare Blanc de Blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single, tiny 1.84ha plot of Chardonnay grapes in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

While Krug's excellent Grande Cuvée and Rosé have historically been released as multi-vintage blends with no indication of year, the team have now started including edition numbers so consumers can easily discover the age and provenance of the base wines used in the blend.
