Kongsgaard Chardonnay 2022 showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of John Kongsgaard and his son, Alex, both of whom have deep familial ties to Napa Valley. Founded in the 1990s, their winery focuses on organic and sustainable practices, emphasising the unique terroir. The wine presents notes of dried lemon peel, tangerine oil and chamomile, underscored by a hazelnut quality. The drought conditions of 2022 contribute to its dense and phenolic profile, offering a significant weight and intensity.

The 2022 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) is typically a blend of Hyde, Hudson, Arcadia and a few others. In 2022, Hudson was not in the blend. Dried lemon peel, tangerine oil, hazelnut and chamomile unfurl in the glass. The drought conditions of the year produced a wine of considerable intensity. Its weight and viscous intensity make it a sort of mini-Judge. The 2022 is very dense and phenolic.

A Cult Favorite: Precision and Power in Every Glass

Kongsgaard is a name that echoes through the valleys of Napa as one of the most distinguished boutique wineries in the region. Founded by John Kongsgaard, whose winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in minimalism and a profound respect for the land, the estate produces wines that are powerful yet nuanced. Kongsgaard’s approach involves minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to speak for itself through the vines. The estate is particularly renowned for its Chardonnay, which exhibits intense minerality, vibrant acidity, and a rich, complex palate. In addition to Chardonnay, Kongsgaard’s Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon also enjoy cult status, with small production volumes ensuring their rarity and desirability. These wines are a true reflection of Napa Valley’s potential to produce world-class, terroir-driven wines.
