Fifth-generation Napa natives, Maggy and John Kongsgaard began their winemaking venture in the 1970s planting The Judge vineyard on the Kongsgaard family land near Napa. The inaugural Kongsgaard wines came in 1996. The wines are produced in the family`s underground winery, a cave dug into the volcanic rock, high on the eastern rim of the Napa Valley where the Kongsgaards have planted a spectacular mountain vineyard. These intensely farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and a traditional low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines vivid expressions of vineyard and variety. A Chardonnay with beautiful intensity and a masterful use of oak, produced in very small quantities.

“The 2014 Chardonnay is a knockout, showing loads of structure, with lemon blossom intermixed with subtle pineapple, honeysuckle and crushed rock, giving it a vivid minerality, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a long, long finish. This should drink well for 7-8 years at minimum.

Part mystic, part great winemaker and long-time veteran of the Napa Valley wine scene, John Kongsgaard continues to turn out a bevy of exciting and compelling wines from his family’s vineyards high in the cool, rocky soils of Coombsville in the southeastern sector of Napa Valley.” 94+ points Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Kongsgaard's 2014 Chardonnay is a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. Expansive, rich and super-expressive, the 2014 is surprisingly accessible at such a young age. I am not sure how well the 2014 will age, but it is exceptionally beautiful and inviting today. Slate, candied lemon, vanillin and a hint of reduction infuse the striking finish. This is a terrific vintage for the Napa Valley Chardonnay.

A Cult Favorite: Precision and Power in Every Glass

Kongsgaard is a name that echoes through the valleys of Napa as one of the most distinguished boutique wineries in the region. Founded by John Kongsgaard, whose winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in minimalism and a profound respect for the land, the estate produces wines that are powerful yet nuanced. Kongsgaard’s approach involves minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to speak for itself through the vines. The estate is particularly renowned for its Chardonnay, which exhibits intense minerality, vibrant acidity, and a rich, complex palate. In addition to Chardonnay, Kongsgaard’s Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon also enjoy cult status, with small production volumes ensuring their rarity and desirability. These wines are a true reflection of Napa Valley’s potential to produce world-class, terroir-driven wines.
