Kistler Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2005 is a white wine from the Russian River Valley, produced from low-yielding vines on well-drained Goldridge sandy loam. The vintage was moderate and even, allowing gradual ripening and retention of acidity. Aromas of lemon oil, white peach and almond are lifted by hints of smoke and wet stone. The palate is finely weighted, its creamy texture balanced by brisk acidity and a subtle saline edge. Lees ageing adds quiet complexity without excess richness, and the finish is long and precise, capturing the vineyard’s cool-climate tension and Kistler’s restrained, elegant style.

Yellow-gold. Chalky citrus, quince and apple aromas are complicated by smoky lees, minerals and lemon pith. Bracing lime and pink grapefruit flavors gain weight with air, taking a turn to orange and tangerine. A firm, light-bodied chardonnay that offers intensity without excess weight, finishing with tangy mineral grip and great persistence. On this soil, which is low in clay, this Wente clone is all about minerals, noted Kistler.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2008
