Keller Westhofen Brunnenhäusern Abts Erde Riesling Spätlese 2010 is an off-dry Riesling from the Abts Erde parcel of the Brunnenhäusern vineyard in Rheinhessen. This wine exhibits the high acidity characteristic of the 2010 vintage, providing a precise and focused structure. The aromatic profile includes ripe stone fruits, citrus and hints of floral elements. The Spätlese classification contributes to a full-bodied texture alongside noticeable sweetness, balanced by vibrant acidity and a mineral backbone reflective of the vineyard`s limestone soils.

From a stonier, higher portion of this site than his A.P. #16 – though given the same elevage – the auction-bound Keller 2010 Westhofener Brunnenhauschen - Abtserde Riesling Spatlese A.P. #17 makes a quite different statement. Elegant and transparent to bitter sweetly floral perfume – iris as well as lily – it’s also luxuriously creamy, with quince joining white peach, quince and Persian melon ably and by no means excessively backed by around 60 grams of residual sugar, for an effect vividly reminiscent of those fresh fruits themselves . At the same time, this is more overtly mineral – stony as well as somehow crystalline – and yet more infectiously juicy and dynamic than the A.P. #16, finishing with a kaleidoscopic sense of floral fruit and mineral interaction, as well as mouthwatering salinity. Look for 20 or more years of marvelous performance here. - David Schildknecht

Like the Kirchspiel, this wine behaves almost more like a Grosses Gewächs than a traditional Spätlese. Very tense and exciting but very youthful too. Racy and with some carbon dioxide. Really racy, appley end. Needs time. (JR)
