Keller Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen Abtserde Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2006 is a dry white wine from the Rheinhessen, grown on the limestone-rich slopes above Westhofen. The warm, humid vintage required strict selection, and this bottling shows Keller’s hallmark precision despite the year’s challenges. Aromas of ripe peach, candied citrus and smoke are layered with honey, herbs and crushed stone. The palate is dense yet tightly wound, its ripe fruit framed by firm acidity and a chalky mineral core. Texture is waxy and complex, evolving toward a long, savoury finish that balances maturity with enduring structural grip.

Vineyard right next to Morstein (Keller owns 2.6 ha out of a total of only 5 ha). Chalky clay and terra rossa topsoil over hard limestone rock. Always produces very small grapes.
Lots of tiny bubbles cling to the glass. Citrus freshness together with a sort of green sweetness like angelica. Intense minerality. Then on the palate, as fine grained as raw silk, delicate ripeness of peaches, yet still savoury and restrained. Arrow-like in purity and length. Tightly focused and so much more to come. (Won’t be released until March 2008.) (JH)
