`JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2011 is a single-vineyard sweet Riesling from the Mosel Valley in Germany. Founded in 1911 by Johann Josef Prüm, Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm focuses solely on terroir-driven Rieslings from distinguished sites like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and further upstream at Bernkasteler Badstube. The Grosse Lage Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is a steep, south-facing slope of pure Devonian blue slate which produces structured and very long-aged Rieslings with a lively, focused minerality. "This aromatic Riesling is gorgeously floral, but not cloying or perfumy, with enticing hints of honey and candle wax. It`s lush and ripe on the palate, with concentrated flavours of tangerine and yellow cherry, along with a streak of lemony acidity that extends the finish." Wine Enthusiast, 2014

Pear and apple essences – wreathed in honeysuckle, heliotrope, lily and apple blossom – characterize the Prum 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #13. With striking delicacy and a vivid sense of wet stone cantus firmus; this combines luscious fresh fruit (adding Persian melon to pear and apple) with the sort of fetching liquid florality that memorably characterizes so many wines in the present collection. A silken texture receives some counterpoint from hints of apple pip and skin as well as the aforementioned stoniness, leading to an unabatingly soothing and enticing finish. Look for at least three decades of delight. (There will be a second, non-auction bottling.)
Katharina Prum says her team did an extensive pre-harvest culling of negatively botrytized material in September, “but it was the beginning of October before you had the ripeness to harvest a good Kabinett.” And the Prums were very happy – over and beyond the no doubt more conspicuous successes that this vintage brought them, including the results of sparse late botrytis – to have been able to bottle a full range of Kabinetts in decent quantity; indeed, there’s marginally more Kabinett than Spatlese, something that would have been taken for granted here 25 or more years ago but is today rare. And what quality and value – not to mention age-ability – these Kabinetts offer! Relatively low – upper 20s or low 30s – residual sugar in them has meant reaching 9-9.5% alcohol, but I defy anyone to charge them with lack of delicacy. “This balance is intentionally what we’re tending toward now,” explains Prum. “Since we don’t make any trocken wines, this is our notion of a light, dry Mosel Riesling. But that doesn’t mean we did any calculations or often had to intervene. For the most part, the wines simply found their own balance.” This year’s collection at Uferalle 19 is happily notable also for wines that are nearly all frank and forthcoming, with little of the interference from fermentative afte

Ample aromas of fresh apple, tropical fruit and lemon oil. Honeyed and rich, but with a delicacy to its papaya fruit, this spatlese is kept alive by its understated acidity. Conveys a clear, refreshing slate character on the spicy finish.Joel Payne1st January 2013
